Remote access & external links
Reach your home from anywhere — safely with Tailscale, WireGuard and share links.

For remote access, rumahl recommends VPN solutions: Tailscale (easiest start) or WireGuard. This keeps all connections end-to-end encrypted, without opening ports on your router.
Setting up a VPN
- 1Install Tailscale on your rumahl device (or configure WireGuard under /etc/wireguard).
- 2Settings → Remote access shows the tunnel status (tailnet IP, online/offline).
- 3On the road: connect your device to the same tailnet and open http://<tailnet-ip>:8126.
Sharing files externally
- 1In the Files app: context menu → Create external link.
- 2The link is valid for 72 hours and prefers the tailnet IP when Tailscale is online.
- 3Optional: set an external base URL with your domain (Settings → Remote access).
External share links are token-protected and expire after 72 hours. Never expose ports like 8126 directly on the router when a VPN option exists.
